Biography – Michael Japenga
Mike Japenga has served as pastor at Chandler Presbyterian Church, which houses the “Chandler I AM Project”, since 2015. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1990 and his Master of Divinity in 1996.
After earning his Master’s Degree, he served as a church pastor for six years prior to becoming a licensed counselor. He first became a Licensed Addictions Counselor in Montana in 2001. He worked inpatient, outpatient, and private practice while there. Mike joined the clinical staff at Chandler Valley Hope in 2006 and spent nine years in that system (inpatient and outpatient treatment). He served as a Counselor, Admissions Coordinator, as well as later being the Community Services Clinician for Valley Hope’s Arizona continuum of care for alcohol, drug and related treatment services.
He believes that folks who struggle with the disease of addiction (and their families) are in need of love and compassion, not condemnation. Addiction is a disease, not a moral or personal failure. Mike is also a recovering alcoholic as well.
