Biography – Edward Upshaw
Commander Edward “Ed” Upshaw is a thirty-two year veteran of the Chandler Police Department with over twenty-four years in supervision and leadership positions. Ed has held assignments in Field Operations, Community Resources, Criminal Investigations, Critical Incident Stress Management, Crisis Negotiations, Honor Guard and the Special Assignment Unit. He is a court certified expert in Gangs and Narcotics Investigations; an accomplished pilot; Scuba Instructor; Martial Artist; and is currently the Chandler Heights Substation Commander of the Chandler Police Department.
Ed’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Science Degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a Master’s Degree from Northern Arizona University. His executive development includes being a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy, and the DEA Drug Unit Commander School. Ed is also a certified instructor with the Arizona Peace Officer Standards Training Board for Defensive Tactics, High Risk Stops and Impact Weapons. He is also a graduate of Arizona Police Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) Arizona Leadership Program, the University of Virginia’s Leading Educating and Developing Seminar (LEADS) , and the Chandler Chamber of Commerce Leadership Institute.
Locally, he has served or currently serves on multiple boards while remaining involved with ICAN (Positive Programs for Youth), CCYSA (Chandler Coalition on Youth Substance Abuse), Kiwanis, and the Chandler Men of Action (CMOA). In 2016, Ed was the recipient of the Valley Hope, “Champions of Hope Award”, and the individual “Heroes Award” from the Henry Salinas Society. In 2017, Ed was named Man of the Year by Chandler’s Men of Action and was honored to be the recipient of the 2018 “Bass Reeves” Law Enforcement Award.
